Although in those days calendar company customers were reluctant to purchase images created by a women, and the company asked her to only sign her early work "Kenyon". Although she completed some early work for various companies she began doing artwork for the Gerlach Barklow Calendar Company of Joliet Illinois shortly after it was founded in 1907. Zula Kenyon was one of the first female calendar artist illustrators and studied under Frederick Freer at the Art Institute in Chicago. It is believed that many of her original artwork was destroyed. This is one of only a few Zula Kenyon original pastels known to still exist. This pastel titled "My Luv's Like a Red Red Rose" was copyrighted in 1914 and used in the 1916 Gerlach Barklow Calendar line. Zula Kenyon - Shhboom Illustration Gallery
